Fun fact: The hole in the middle of a donut wasn’t always there! The first donuts were often called “olykoeks,” which means “oily cakes” in Dutch, and they were usually just fried dough balls. It was an American sailor named Hanson Gregory who is said to have invented the donut with a hole in 1847. He thought the middle didn’t cook properly, so he poked a hole in it!
